So my goal was to come up with something that gives a medium-toned aged finish, minimizes the crazy pine grain, while ending up with a durable oil-based finish on top. I am looking to build a platform / platform bed and I have white oak grey pink floors and looking to contrast it with either a less grainy wood like natural Birch, Maple, and not White Oak, but may want to stain it with a semi glossed Charcoal Gray. I finally gave up, sanded them down to bare wood, and just oiled them with mineral oil, and then kept them oiled on a regular basis. I have read you can bleach red Oak but don’t know how labor-intensive that is I was told my original 1930s floor could not be refinished So picked white oak which I prefer but then a different refinisher said yes they can be refinished. :D Thanks for the comparison – so useful!! And I always prefer to use Rust-Oleum wood stain on pine because you can literally paint it on like paint (just not quite as thick as paint) and it’ll still dry completely in a relatively short amount of time, and you can cover up as much of that crazy pine grain as possible. 4. But when it comes to light a medium-toned stain colors, wood conditioner just doesn’t seem to do much…or at least not nearly enough to suit my taste. If you’re using Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane it’s fine otherwise double check with your polyurethane manufacturer that this is okay but it should be. It turned out a very neutral, medium brown colour. P.S. I’ve used it to refinish my oak kitchen cabinets and I’m working on the oak vanities in my bathrooms now. That looks wonderful! It’s not even like it’s a huge price difference! I’m about to make a few frames with pine and I’ll definitely be getting the conditioner now! None of the charts here state what kind of wood is being tested. Everything I’ve used makes my red oak look pink! You can see some grain, but it didn’t turn a crazy color, and it looks more aged than stained. Cabot makes a good one, and you can get it from Lowe’s. Hello! And as always when I work with pine to try to build something nice, my concern has been the final finishing steps. I am literally holding off on my cedar plank wall project until I can find a freaking can of it somewhere in the universe lol. The product I love is AquaZar top coat in antique flat. The wood is extremely dry. Somehow that makes sense in my mind. I was aghast. The last time I did this I brushed on a coat of water first & wiped it off so the paint absorbed more evenly. All the grey wood stain colors were tested on birch plywood, maple, poplar, pine, and oak. Just want to give you one more suggestion – I have had very good luck with Gel stain- not as easy to find – but much more workable and buildable – goes really far too – Not Milwaukee – General finishes or Old Masters. I assumed it was soft because it had the most trouble accepting stains. Kristi – just be aware that your new table isn’t going to stay the colour you make it at the beginning. It basically goes in and fills up the hair where it is porous so that when you apply the tint it takes evenly from scalp to ends, just stain does after wood conditioner. Perfect! You must stain within 30 minutes of applying but it takes care of making the stain soak in evenly. Ultimately, I think I’ll need to coordinate a color so that I can leave the inside of the cabinets gold, which suggests black to me. White Oak has the most neutral undertones. (Hint: Red). Keep in mind that the application of any stain to wood will result in varible shades due to the natural properties of the wood and AWD is not able to control the outcome, therefore, AWD will NOT accept rejection of any kind due to final appearance of the finish process.
